Notes from the Pastor - 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
August 29, 2010
In the Name of St. Michael’s Parish Family, I would like to thank Fr. Mike Smith for coming to Tybee for the next two weekends. We are so blessed that many of our retired priests are still so active and helping in the Mission of our Diocese here in Savannah. Hopefully, Fr. Mike can connect with some friends while he is here and get a few walks in along the beach. Msgr. Costigan will be covering for any emergencies.
Congratulations to Basil Jackson! I am so sorry to have missed your party on Saturday night. You are a “living” legend! How many times over the years have we all watched the movie, “The Great Escape”? I hope we never forget our heroes of World War II; they are a generation never to be repeated.
In this weekend’s bulletin (100), there is a new brochure that speaks to the ministry we know as priesthood. You might recognize some of the priests in the pictures. There has never been a doubt in my mind that my call to be a priest was nurtured by my family and as a family we daily prayed for vocations. I do believe I am still nurtured by the prayers of the “People of God”. I am not yet thinking of “Retirement”, but the question still is out there: “who is to follow in my footsteps?” I have never regretted my decision to leave my family and come to the Missions of South Georgia. I couldn’t begin to share the blessings and JOY that are in my life as a priest. Let us pray for priestly and religious vocations - our children, may they be OPEN to the “call” from God to serve.
This weekend will be the last weekend we will take up a 2nd collection for the financial issues that were a part of closing St. Michael’s School this June. You have been a most generous people. I am truly grateful for all you who over the years supported our Catholic School with your Stewardship: your TIME, TALENT & TREASURE. Let us look within ourselves now, to see what God is addressing to us now as a Parish as part of our MISSION to Tybee Island by our “presence”; and how might we deepen our own spirituality through prayer and sacrifice.
Pray for me as I spend some special time with my Mother and family. - Fr. Tom

A copy will be presented to our bishop and to the Diocesan Office of Finances, Mr. Larry Saunders. To read a copy of the Audit please see someone on the Parish Council or come to the Parish Office. On the back of the September calendar in this week’s bulletin is a listing of the Parish Council members (“elected”).
I am going on my summer vacation at the end of this week; I will be going home to spend two weeks with my Mother. The two week-end Confession and Sunday Mass schedule will be covered by Fr. Mike Smith, a retired priest who lives in Statesboro. There will be no Saturday morning service. Reflections from the Pastor Feast of the Assumption - August 15, 2010
Many of you know by now that I love Movies. I have never lost the excitement of the big screen; although I am watching more movies now in my house thanks to Netflix. Going to the movies is just too expensive.
One of my "Classic" movies is Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird". Yes, I do buy some movies! Thre are some I can watch over and over again. At the end of the movie there is this moving courtroom scene. Atticus Finch, a lawyer and a main character, is defending his client Tom Robinson, a black man falsely accused of raping a white woman - the movie takes place in the South, 1930. Atticus has given a persuasive closing argument that leaves no doubt of his client's innocence, but the jury returns a guilty verdict. At the courtroom clears, Tom's children, Jem and Scout watch from the gallery with family and friends. Everyone stands but Scout. A man next to Scout bends down and admonishes her; "Stand up. Your father's passing."
The Feast of the Assumption is our way of standing while Mary passes. We honor Mary, not for who she is; but for what she has done. Her beginnings were as humble as yours and mine, but she chose to do what was true and good at every crossroad of her life.
She was open to God's offer to serve in an extraordinary way. She nurtured and cared for Jesus and allowed her Son the freedom to grow in self-understanding and purpose. Most of all, she listened, learned, and became a devoted follower of God's way. We cherish Mary because she lived her life with complete integrity. What happened to her late in life is not recorded. But she probably did not just wait to die. More likely, she preached and told stories and quoted her Son. (After all, she taught Jesus at her knee). She probably gave comfort and hope to those who believed Him while continually rising above all that was happening around her. May Mary, Our Mother, continue to care for us.
- Fr. Tom

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)
What is RCIA? RCIA is the process established for the universal Church for individuals to become Catholic and receive the sacraments of initiation — Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist. This initiation process also involves a parish community experiencing a renewal in faith as it prepares and welcomes new members into the Church. The Rite speaks of conversion as a “spiritual journey.” Centered on fostering a deep relationship with Jesus and the Church he founded, this journey takes place through distinct stages over a period of time suitable to bring about a thorough catechesis, significant experience of the parish community, and commitment to the liturgical and moral life of the Catholic faithful.
How does our parish attract inquirers each year who consider becoming Catholic? The short answer is you! When any parish has many inquirers year after year, it is the fruit of the Holy Spirit as parish members open their hearts to welcome others. Members of a welcoming and evangelizing community take seriously their call to share the Divine message of salvation. It happens in parish families, in the workplace, in gatherings with friends and neighbors, and in daily contacts. Give thanks to God as he continuously strengthens each of us who seek to do his will in offering a gentle, humble, and clear welcome to the Catholic faith.
“Go out into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.” (Mark 16:15)
Classes begin on Monday, September 13th at 7 p.m.

“Summertime” - Reflections from the Pastor
19th Sunday in Ordinary Time - August 8th, 2010
One of the more important projects that I knew needed attention when I came to St. Michael’s three years ago was the need to replace all the electrical wiring in the Church. Hurricanes have not been my worry as your pastor since we pray every day asking for God’s protection during hurricane season. However I have been somewhat nervous about a Fire in the church. That being said, this project was cautiously “put-off” so that the Parish Council and Finance Board could come to a clear understanding of our parish finances and to work on balancing our annual parish budget. With the running of our Parish School, this made our financial picture all the more complicated.
The Parish Council is ready to vote on the “approval” of a “balanced” Parish Budget for the FY 2010-11 at their August 19th meeting. I am happier now, than I have been prior, with the picture of our Parish Finances. It has been a LONG paper trail of figures and confusion of record keeping. The bishop and I brought in a business firm to help with determining some of our financial history.
This past June 2010, the Parish Council voted to spend $7000 for Phase I of a project to replace all the electrical wiring in the Church. We were hoping for the project to be completed in TWO Phases and not to exceed budget. We are well into the rewiring process and it has been determined that there will be a need not only for Phase II, but also a Phase III. The cost, obviously, will be more than what the Parish Council approved in June. But the rewiring of the Church will continue; and, the Parish Council, Finance Board and I will work on the cost factor at our August meeting.
This might be an incentive for some parishioners to make an increase in their Offertory Giving/Tithing; and, for those who had stopped giving to the Parish because of the School Subsidy and other personal reasons -- to come back to being “good stewards”. As our attention moves now away from a parish school and towards evaluating and prioritizing Building & Grounds needs of the Parish, we ask God’s continued blessings on all our works and deeds.
- Fr. Tom

2nd Collection Next Week: Keep Faith. Support the Church in Latin America. The Church in this region is undergoing a great continental mission, intended to strengthen the faith of the people and to create leaders in their own lands. The Church is being weakened by the loss of its members because of economic migration, and it suffers from a low priest-to-parishioner ratio. Next week’s collection funds catechesis and formation programs, evangelization, religious training, and other pastoral programs designed to strengthen and renew the faith. For the cost of your morning coffee, you could buy a child her First Holy Communion book. Can you spare a few cups? Please be generous in next week’s Collection.
