Pastor’s Varia
I have made it through my second “July” here on Tybee Island, and we are in the middle of my second “Hurricane Season.” We thank God that the recent Hurricane Debbie was gentle, relatively speaking. I still remember how startled I was when I realized that I was being assigned to St. Michael Church on Tybee in July 2023 and Hurricane Brett was already on the way. Thank God, it also turned away and did not destroy!
This Saturday night (August 17th), I will be at the Cathedral for the annual Called by Name supper with the Bishop. You may remember that the Called by Name campaign we implemented last fall gave us the names of hundreds of young men and women around the diocese who others thought would be some of the future Catholic leaders in the Savannah diocese. This dinner marks the end of the “Vocation Year” and gives these youngsters the opportunity to meet Bp. Parkes, hear his vocation story and get a photo with him.
I will be in Minneapolis the week of Aug 25-30 at the National Convention of Diocesan Vocation Directors. This gathering of 250 priest vocation directors from every diocese in the country is always enjoyable, but also very valuable. I always learn things which other dioceses are doing which we may be able to implement here in Savannah. I expect it to be a bit cooler way up there!
Big events coming for St. Michael’s include the Kickoff Meeting for Family Faith Formation on August 25th. Mother Olga and her Sisters will be here for their evangelization-mission from Sep 30-Oct 7th. On Oct 6th, we will have our annual Mass at the pier in honor of St. Michael the Archangel. Please mark your calendars for these events.
I do love the Fall, when we celebrate the Four “Fs”: Faith, Family, Food and Fun. And don’t forget about Football!
Life is Good at Tybee, but Jesus is the Best, here and everywhere; now and forever! Amen.
