St. John Paul II once wrote: “Jesus is the answer to which every human heart is the question.” Every true desire of the human heart is only ultimately fully-filled (fulfilled) by Christ. This is true, even when those desires get twisted and confused by original sin.
This is why G.K. Chesterton wrote: The man who knocks on the door of the brothel is looking for God.” Obviously, this man is badly confused, but the desire for love and union are holy and true desires. Dr. Bob Schuchts of the John Paul II Healing Center points this out: “Behind every disordered desire is a good and holy desire, an unmet need, an unhealed wound, and a hidden pattern of sin.”
What are the primary desires of the human heart? Love, safety (security), intimacy, freedom (self-determination), meaningful work, union with God and others, joy. Can you think of some others?
After the Lord Jesus preached to the multitudes and did miracles in today’s Gospel, he went away to rest and pray. The disciples went in search of him and said, “Everyone is looking for You!” It is still true and will always be.
