This week we begin the Annual Catholic Appeal. Your sacrificial gift and prayers will help make this year’s appeal a success. Our parish target is $$33,492 and we can do this if, after thoughtful consideration and prayer, each one of us participates according to our ability. This is the 29th time that I’ve led a parish appeal for the Diocese, and I’ve been blessed to pastor faith communities that have always reached their goal. I am so grateful for your generosity to this important campaign.
As we watch Bishop Parkes message this weekend, it is time for us to do what we can to support not only our Diocese but the programs and ministries that benefit our parish and our Catholic community. The ACA supports the office of Catholic Schools and the education of our future priest and deacons. The ACA supports ministries that change lives for the better. We are blessed with much; let us be a blessing to others.
In the Gospel this week, Jesus gives us the Beatitudes. They are meant to be a guide for his followers as they remind us that we need to depend on God’s love. As Pope Francis said with the Beatitudes, Jesus “shows us the way to life, the way that he himself has taken. Jesus himself is the way, and he proposes this way as the path to true happiness. Throughout his life, from his birth in the stable in Bethlehem until his death on the cross and his resurrection, Jesus embodied the Beatitudes. All the promises of God’s Kingdom were fulfilled in him. In proclaiming the Beatitudes, Jesus asks us to follow him and to travel with him along the path of love, the path that alone leads to eternal life. It is not an easy journey, yet the Lord promises us his grace and he never abandons us. We face so many challenges in life: poverty, distress, humiliation, the struggle for justice, persecutions, the difficulty of daily conversion, the effort to remain faithful to our call to holiness, and many others. But if we open the door to Jesus and allow him to be part of our lives, if we share our joys and sorrows with him, then we will experience the peace and joy that only God, who is infinite love, can give. (Message of Pope Francis for the World Youth Day 2014).”
On the Way Home: The Beatitudesare attitudes that lead to true happiness. What does society say makes people happy? What really makes people happy? What makes you happy?
