Altar Server Guidelines October 2013
Adult servers can wear either albs or “dress clothes”. If there are two servers, both must be attired the same way. Adults serving with a son/daughter must wear an alb. If you wear an alb, it includes the rope belt and cross.
“Dress clothes” for men means jacket, pants and tie; no shorts. An exception for the jacket will be made only in hot weather. Shoes must be worn; no sneakers, sandals, or crocs.
“Dress clothes” for women means dress, skirt or long pants and top. Dresses or skirts must be knee length or longer. Low-cut necklines and tank tops are not allowed. Shoes or sandals may be worn; no sneakers or crocs.
Arrive at the sacristy 15 minutes before Mass. Sign the roster.
Prior to Mass, make sure all altar candles are lit. After Mass, extinguish all altar candles.
If you plan to use a kneeler on the altar, place it there before Mass starts.
A candle should always be carried by the server for entrance, gifts procession, and final exit.
Altar servers cannot perform any other duties during that Mass (lector, usher, Eucharistic Minister).
See Altar Server Procedures for specifics during Mass.
If you cannot make your scheduled Mass, please arrange for a substitute.
