“Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created and you shall renew the face of the earth.
Let us pray. O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit instructs the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Spirit, we may be wise and ever rejoice in His consolations. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.”
On the feast of Pentecost the Father sent the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and Mary gathered together in the upper room. The Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, the Spirit who leads us into all truth, was promised by our Lord Jesus before he ascended into heaven. The Spirit transformed the timid and scared apostles into zealous and fearless preachers of the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
This same Spirit is poured out today upon each of us in our baptism and in our Confirmation. We receive this very same Spirit! The same gifts are ours – the gifts of Fear of the Lord, Piety, Knowledge, Fortitude, Counsel, Understanding, and Wisdom. These gifts are ours – do we know what they mean, what they are? Have we unwrapped them? Do we use them or are the gathering dust?
With this feast, the Easter Season ends. We need the Holy Spirit as we leave the wonder of the Resurrection and go to tell all people about the abundant love of Jesus, about the truth, goodness, and beauty of our God!
Ask the Holy Spirit to give you wisdom, understanding, knowledge, piety, counsel, fortitude when things are difficult, and awe and wonder at all the Lord has given us.
