No doubt, my Mom will be meeting me at the pearly gates to tell St. Peter that I've not done enough time in purgatory to make up for the fact that I hardly sent out any Christmas thank yous before I left for the Holy Land. Please forgive me, my Mom taught me better and as many of you know from personal experience my dear friend, Fr. David Arnoldt, is so much better than I at getting out thank yous in a timely manner. I am grateful that he is filling in for me this week.
What can I say, I am a slacker, but I also am so very grateful for how kind and generous so many of you have been to me at Christmas and over the years. I am remembering y'all in prayer as I walk through the Holy Land. And I will continue to work on my thank yous when I return. My Mom will haunt me until I get them done.
My 70th birthday will be on February 18th • I've always celebrated my birthday over a period of weeks, my "birthday season." So, I hope you can join me at the Tybee Post Theatre on Friday evening, February 3rd (the 18th wasn't available) for the kick-off of my birthday season. I've rented (it's surprisingly inexpensive) the Theatre out for the night to share one of my favorite movies, The Princess Bride, with a hundred or so of my Tybee friends. So, mark your calendars for a great night. No presents please.
Congratulations to Chief Tiffany Hayes who was sworn in this week as Tybee's new Chief of Police. Chief Hayes grew up on Tybee, attended St. Michael School, and is a long-time parishioner. We are grateful to Chief Hayes for the role that she has played in protecting our island over the years and we pray through the intercession of our patron, St. Michael for her as she now leads her force in keeping us safe. As a police officer's role is to protect the public from the activities incited by the devil it is absolutely natural that Saint Michael is also the Patron Saint of the Tybee Island Police Department. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Deacon Bob Larcher begins a Church History Monday Night Series on January 16th at 6pmin the Church. All are welcome! And by popular demand the School for Disciples will be returning on Wednesday, January 25 th at 5:30pm in the Churchyard (or Church if it's too cold). We will be faith sharing about the Ten Commandments:
Are the Ten Commandments antiquated and obsolete?
Do they have anything useful for us in the 21st century?
How did they come to be, and what was theiroriginal purpose?
Have the 10 commandments evolved?
In this series, Sr. Joan Chittister, OSB, invites us to think deeply about the moral fibers of our society. She presents the idea that the Ten Commandments are an adventure in human growth and that we are not so much convicted by them as we are transformed by them.
